BMW Engine

Valvetronics, double-vanos, high precision injection, and innovative turbocharging technology are the 4 components that go into help making BMW the ultimate driving machine. The BMWBMW Engine engine is efficient at reaching the exclusive connection between performance and consumption.

Valvetronics

Experience improved performance whilst consuming less gasoline with valvetronic technology that allows you to achieve greater driving pleasure from the BMW engine.

This radically innovative technology exchanges the usual throttle butterfly with an electric device that regulates the quantity of lift of distinct intake valves on every cylinder. Your BMW engine is allowed to breathe freely, providing enhanced performance while consuming less gasoline.

BMW engine performance is enhanced both efficiently and immediately by eliminating pumping penalties and airflow disruption triggered by an orthodox throttle butterfly. Air now flows throughout the intake manifold easily, and Valvetronic accurately adjusts the amount of air flowing through the chambers.

By improving the air/fuel mix process, Valvetronic yields up to 10 percent fuel savings. Valvetronic also benefits cold start performance, reduces emissions, and delivers immediate power that is smoother than previous models.

Double-VANOS

Double-Vanos is the name given to the dual variable camshaft control found in the BMW engine. Smooth idling, better torque, and variable power are benefits to the double-VANOS modification of camshaft timing to boost power output through the rpm range. Whatever the speed, drivers benefit from enhanced performance, increased fuel efficiency, and decreased exhaust emissions.

The designation VANBMW VanosOS is originated from the German phrase “variable Nockenwellensteuerung”, which means variable camshaft control. The double-VANOS system constantly corrects the camshaft points for both exhaust and intake valves. This creates considerably greater torque at lower engine speeds with additional power at faster BMW engine speeds, while decreasing gas consumption and exhaust emissions.

With double-Vanos the location of the camshaft is relocated so the valves release later, at slower engine speeds to improve idling quality and deliver a smoother power increase. As engine speed is increased, the valves open sooner, which improves torque, diminishes fuel intake, and reduces exhaust emissions. At faster engine speeds, the valves are released later once more in order to permit complete power distribution.

Double-VANOS also regulates the quantity of exhaust gas redirected back to the intake manifold, improving fuel efficiency. This system utilizes a unique set of restrictions in the BMW engine’s warm-up stage to assist the catalytic converter in attaining its optimal operational temperature quickly which helps decrease emissions. BMW’s Digital Motor Electronics (DME) measures this whole procedure.

BMW initiated the innovative VANOS system in 1992, followed by the arrival of the double-VANOS in 1997.

High Precision Injection

High Precision Injection refers to the pioneering direct fuel injection system developed by BMW that creates a more efficient ignition process. The BMW engine produces better performance along with significantly reduced fuel utilization.BMW Fuel Injection Service

High Precision Injection is a feature of the Twin Power Turbo package that makes up a portion of the BMW EfficientDynamics package, coupling increased performance with improved fuel efficiency.

High Precision Injection guarantees accurate fuel quantity for astonishingly efficient and clean fuel burning. The performance-tuned, adaptable electronic control system modifies the scheduling and amount of the injected fuel according to the engine power requirement, operational temp and cylinder compression. This guarantees that combustion is accurately measured, very clean, and extremely proficient, no matter the driving conditions.

Additionally, the added inner cooling of the combustion compartment during the direct injection procedure assists in the selection of a high compression ratio that greatly increases the effectiveness of BMW engines.

Turbo Charging Technology

Turbochargers in BMW engines improve torque advancement, optimize performance, and decrease fuel consumption.

A BMW engine’s proficiency and performance are dependent upon the volume of oxygen in the combustion compartments. The more oxygen that is offered results in more fuel being discharged which in turn improves performance. A turbocharger utilizes the available energy from the exhaust vapors to offer additional oxygen for ignition; this is accomplished by means of a turbine fan powered by a compressor that condenses the incoming air. This intensifies the pressure in the BMW engine’s air intake manifold, subsequently filling the chambers which results in enhanced performance and increased torque over a wide-ranging period. Modern-day turbo technology coincidently lowers exhaust emissions and fuel consumption.

BMW, in addition to boosting their dynamics and reaction, also improve engine performance and fuel consumption by utilizing a double charging standard for its most prevailing turbo engines for every class. Dependent on the prevailing technology, two independent turbochargers from a single exhaust pipe or one turbocharger from two distinct exhaust pipes are utilized. In especially powerful models like the BMW M5, these Twin Spooling turbochargers also deliver air to the BMW engine.

Two distinctive technologies come into play when utilizing dual turbochargers. A twin turbo setup makes use of two identically sized turbochargers set up in parallel. Half of the cylinders are supplied with compressed air from each turbo. This turbo technology, when combined with the high precision injection system, allows for easy power yield and little fuel consumption.

Diagnosing BMW Engine Problems

Are you experiencing any of the following issues with your BMW engine?

• Flickering oil pressure light
• Low oil pressure
• Knocking sound from engine
• Tapping noise in engine compartment
• BMW Engine Malfunction – Reduced Power
• Limp Mode

An oil pressure light that flickers while driving, or an overdue oil light that does not briefly come on when the key engages, is essentially cautioning of problems related to oil pressure, such as low pressure, or low engine oil, or perhaps both.

The key to some of the above issues is a result of problems with BMW engine oil. Every engine loses a certain amount of oil pressure as everyday wear and tear affects the clearance of bearings over time. However, abnormally low oil pressure in a BMW engine, irrespective of mileage, is frequently a sign that some component has failed and needs urgent repairs. Lack of oil pressure in your BMW will eventually result in catastrophic engine failure.

A knocking sound from the engine could be related to a damaged piston bearing or a broken crankshaft, triggered by low oil pressure, or low engine oil that will eventually break lower engine components. Regularly monitoring and maintaining engine oil levels and pressure is essential for all BMW engines.

Tapping noise coming from the engine compartment could be a result of loose rockers, a sticking lifter, and perhaps attributed to a problem with low oil pressure that will eventually bend the engine valves. Once again, constant oil pressure and level monitoring is critical for BMW engines, especially those utilizing hydraulic lifters.

“BMW Engine Malfunction – Reduced Power” and “Limp Mode” are BMW warning lights that alert the driver of an issue with the engine or transmission that may prevent the vehicle from starting again should it be shut off, or will only operate at a reduced power.  The messages also state that the driver should take the vehicle in to the closest BMW dealer immediately.  Our shop has the same diagnostic equipment as the dealer, only difference is we do not charge the same high prices as the dealer.  Our expert BMW technicians have decades of experience diagnosing and repairing any age or model BMW vehicle.
